DUBAI – The FIFA World Cup 2026 proved to be a landmark tournament for Arab football, both on and off the pitch.
A record eight Arab nations competed at the expanded 48-team tournament, producing historic achievements that captivated audiences across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Those milestones translated into unprecedented television audiences, with beIN SPORTS revealing that matches involving Arab teams attracted a cumulative viewership of more than 2.1 billion.
According to independent audience measurement by Ipsos, Egypt's dramatic Round of 16 clash against Argentina was the most-watched match involving an Arab team, drawing 192.6 million viewers. Morocco's quarter-final against France followed with an audience of 151.6 million as fans across the region tuned in despite challenging overnight and early morning kick-off times.
beIN SPORTS, the region's leading sports broadcaster, aired every match of this summer's FIFA World Cup live and exclusively across 24 markets in MENA. With the tournament hosted in Canada, Mexico and the United States, kick-offs regularly came at 01:00, 04:00 and 06:00 MECCA, yet audiences continued to rise, with pre-dawn matches attracting more than 100 million viewers.

Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia represented the Arab world in North America, making this the largest Arab presence ever at a FIFA World Cup.
History was made early in the tournament. Qatar secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after holding eventual quarter-finalists Switzerland. Tournament debutants Jordan scored in all three of their group-stage matches, including against reigning world champions Argentina. That match was watched by 65 million viewers, while King Abdullah II attended from the stands.
Algeria also enjoyed a memorable campaign by progressing to the knockout rounds. Their last-32 meeting with Switzerland, which kicked off at 06:00 MECCA, attracted an audience of 123.1 million viewers across the region.
No team, however, produced more historic moments than Egypt. The Pharaohs recorded their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory by defeating New Zealand 3-1 before claiming their first knockout-stage win against Australia. That victory, watched by more than 157 million viewers, secured Egypt's maiden appearance in the Round of 16.
Their last-16 encounter against world champions Argentina became one of the defining matches of the tournament. Egypt held a 2-0 advantage with only 12 minutes remaining before eventually losing 3-2 in a dramatic finish. The 19:00 MECCA kick-off attracted 192.6 million viewers, making it the biggest audience for any Arab match at FIFA World Cup 2026. Within Egypt, 94 percent of the country's adult population watched the contest.
Morocco's legacy
Morocco continued to build on their remarkable World Cup record after becoming history-making semi-finalists in 2022. The Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab nation to reach consecutive FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
They defeated the Netherlands in the last 32, with that match drawing 81.1 million viewers, before overcoming co-hosts Canada to secure a place in the quarter-finals. The victory over Canada attracted 149 million viewers and, alongside Egypt's qualification, marked the first time two Arab nations reached the Round of 16 in the same FIFA World Cup.
Morocco's quarter-final against France in Boston kicked off at 23:00 MECCA and drew an audience of 151.6 million viewers. In Morocco itself, 97 percent of the country's adult population watched the match, underlining the scale of national support behind the team.
Audience records
The tournament generated consistently strong viewing figures from the group stage onwards.
The most-watched group-stage fixture involving an Arab nation was Egypt's 1-1 draw with Iran, which attracted 107.5 million viewers despite a 06:00 MECCA kick-off. Egypt's draw with Belgium was watched by 91.7 million viewers, while the team's victory over New Zealand drew 84.8 million.
Morocco's opening 1-1 draw against five-time champions Brazil attracted 75.5 million viewers despite beginning at 01:00 MECCA. Iraq's group-stage meeting with 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finalists Senegal drew 71.4 million viewers, while Saudi Arabia's 03:00 MECCA fixture against Cabo Verde still attracted 44.9 million viewers.
Across all 29 matches featuring Arab teams, cumulative viewership surpassed 2.1 billion. The 23 group-stage fixtures generated 1.25 billion viewers, averaging more than 54 million per match. Audience figures rose sharply during the knockout rounds, where six Arab matches attracted a combined 854 million viewers, averaging more than 142 million per match.
